Evan Vierra’s ethereal 2012 piece, Caldera, expertly explores the seemingly unliveable space between fantasy and actuality. Having witnessed firsthand his father’s own dissatisfaction with a medically induced reality following his schizoaffective disorder, Vierra states that Caldera ‘aims to not only venerate my father, but all brilliant minds forged in the haunted depths of psychosis’.

The apparent dichotomy between Caldera’s two realities artfully demonstrates the cruel incompatibility of blind truth and the fluid beauty of conceptual freedom. Though Vierra marks his fantasy in the cool serenity of an ocean cove, the city left behind remains a constant reminder for balance in all things, and that brilliance lies on either side of reality’s middle line.
