It’s easy to see how Vin Diesel, a self-declared D&D fanatic, would be drawn into the world of The Last Witch Hunter.

There are flashes here and there of a fantasy universe as richly drawn as John Wick’s. Sadly, we never get a chance to visit it. Instead we’re stuck in a derivative action movie that’s like Van Helsing with all the joy sucked out of it.

Diesel’s bland hero – a Mary Sue with a mouthful of marbles – has absolutely no chemistry with the underused Rose Leslie, while Elijah Wood and Michael Caine just look lost and bored respectively.

The best thing that one can say about The Last Witch Hunter is that it’s original. It’s still crap, but at least you’ve never seen crap quite like this before.
