Actor, singer and professional handsome man Joseph Gordon-Levitt can now add writer and director to his list of accolades thanks to one of the year’s finest comedies.

JGL ensures his eponymous narcissist remains the right side of smugly charming even before his redemptive encounter with Moore’s bereaved older woman, while Johansson excels as the deeply unlikable Barbara.

With well-paced, inventive editing, JGL is as confident behind the camera as he is in front. The script likewise crackles with satiric wit, revealing how Hollywood romcoms – just as much as porn – can corrupt our views on sex and relationships.

Don Jon, like its protagonist, is more than superficial style, confronting a difficult topic with maturity, humour and sensitivity. A guilt-free pleasure!

Rating: 4/5
